Fun badges encourage more children and young people to start climbing.

Svenska Klätterförbundet (The Swedish Climbing Federation) asked Byn to help them structure and redesign the 13 climbing badges and illustrations that are used by instructors and leaders to motivate and encourage children and young people to take up and keep climbing.

Reducing 13 to 7

The current thirteen different climbing badges would be redesigned into seven different climbing challenges.

  1. Starta (Start). Perform the figure-of-eight knot, participate in the buddy check, and use the correct phrase: “I’m climbing.
  2. Våga (Dare). Take a planned fall on top rope.
  3. Smyga (Sneak). Climb on tiptoes with beanbags on your feet.
  4. Upptäcka (Discover). Create your own route among the holds and climb it.
  5. Peppa (Encourage). Cheer on your climbing buddy.
  6. Toppa (Top out). Reach the top of the wall.
  7. Leta (Search). Top rope climb with a blindfold.

For each assignment, Byn created a new illustration featuring the mascot, Kritan, carrying out the various tasks.

Checklist and poster

As supporting materials for schools and clubs, we produced a checklist for teachers and leaders to use when motivating children to complete all the different assignments, and a poster to further illustrate and explain those assignments.

Climbing Badge

As a final incentive and to foster a sense of pride among the children, we also designed a pin which the children receive after completing and being approved for all seven tasks.
